Not like the movies

This weekend I embarked on another little baking bonanza. I made a (rather large) batch of 'american breakfast pancakes' from Nigella's book, which I mentioned a couple of posts back. It was super easy, and my topping of choice was honey. But I think I am going to butter up the remaining ones and take them in a little tupperware box to work tomorrow. So simple, but so good. If I make them again soon, I would serve them piping hot with tate & lyle golden syrup or some maple syrup - yum! When is pancake day anyways, soon? This is the first time I have ever made 'proper' pancakes, every other time it's been the premixed sachet or bottle stuff (which always just ends up coming out tasting like flat yorkshire puds, don't you think?)

You're probably looking at the third picture and wondering what the hell they are... well, that was my first (frustrating!) attempt at chocolate macaroons. Again, from Nigella's book. But during the week I had watched Lorraine on Baking Made Easy rustle up some macaroons, and actually seeing them be made was enough motivation for me to try them this weekend. Her recipe differed from Nigella's in so many ways. Lets just say, Lorraine made it look too easy :( I think I know where I went wrong now, and what I would do differently next time. So although they look like cow pats, I promise you they actually tasted alright! Nothing on the macaroons I tasted in the summer. It's going to take a lot of practise but I am determined to master them!

I know I keep saying it but I literally cannot believe how quickly this year is flying in. This is my last week on my current job, and then I have some time on a feature film before I'm back at the BBC again. Next saturday I have my Dad's wedding, which I am really excited about! Even though I know I'm going to be a total mush and cry my eyes out. I managed to find a lovely dress and heels a la Topshop at the weekend. Which I shall share with y'all soon. Also bought a new bra and new black tights (ohh its the simple joys in life! haha) and some clippy flowers from primark for in my hair. Did see some beautiful hairbands and fascinator style clips in Topshop when I got my other stuff, but they were all ridiculously over priced for what I was needing/wanting. I've got a nice new bag from Next to wear on the day, but I'm still undecided on my jacket. Dark grey blazer or my cape? Probs not going to have it on for very long anyways.

Relieved that the wedding present for my dad and step mum is all organised and paid for, my outfit is sorted, tan is ready to rock and roll on fri night, makeup at mac is booked for the sat morning... there was one last thing to think about. Hair! I have been emailing back and forwards with the wonderful Kel, who has given me advice on how I could style my hair on the day and what sort of accessories (FASCINATOR FEAR!) would suit my hair. She's an absolute wee gem, and I have my plan of action all sorted ;)

My mumma came over this afternoon to cut David's hair, and to cut and dye my hair. I got a nice mahogony brown, my blonde flash redone and my fringe cut back in. She also brought us over some amazing homemade beef goulash, and lasagne. Miss my mums cooking so much ♥ My hair has changed quite a bit in the past six months, having a fringe is helping to distract me on my mission to grow it longer. You can see how different it is in this youtube vid, my interview for Focus West Rsamd. I was interviewed during the summer along with a handful of other graduates/professionals who work across the creative industries. Its a total cringe, I was hella shy but I'm going to share it on here anyways. Be gentle...

(GREAT snapshot, I know. Haha, I look awfy peely wally! Total scots term, sorry :p)

We found out on friday night that our flat has been sold. It belongs to my dad, and he has been trying to sell it for a while now but the current climate isn't the best, as I'm sure we all know. I am happy for him, because it has been a bit of a burden and a worry since he has been living in his new house with my step mum and baby brother. So it's good that it's finally been sold! It worked out well as a first flat for us to rent, and we were helping my dad out at the same time. But now we have to start looking for somewhere new to live. I am anxious, and worried about finding somewhere nice but within our budget. We were meant to have our first viewing today, at a place just around the corner which would be PERFECT. But, the landlord didn't turn up :( So that shook my nerves a bit and I spent the rest of my day telling myself we aren't going to find somewhere easily or soon. We don't want to move right into the city, we like it out here in the suburbs but most places are only for sale, rather than for rent. I hope you all who have experienced in flat hunting and flat viewing can tell me I'm just being silly, but I just find the whole process really daunting. So fingers crossed we find somewhere soon, and that I can lighten up a bit and actually enjoy the whole process and adventure of moving to a new home :)

Have a lovely week whatever you're upto,

Ayden x

(Ps. I reached 600 readers on google friend connect during the week. Overwhelmed is an absolute understatement! Thank you all, endlessly. And hello to the new folks who have joined recently. Come and say hello!)

  2. mmmm those pancakes look yummy! The macarons looks a bit iffy but I bet they tasted nice :)
It's worth haggling with a flat, I managed to get the TV license and internet for free when I was in uni because the landlord wanted the house filled.
I would love to work for the BBC, I might apply for work experience because loads of things are made in Cardiff now like Dr Who, Sherlock and Merlin. I would love to help with the costumes.

    Good luck with flat hunting

  3. I was looking at macaroon recipes the other day and your attempt looks a hell of a lot better than some of the car crashes I saw! I'm thinking that trying to make my own would probably put me off though, I've never actually tried them! The only time I've seen them was in Paris but I'd been camping and festivaling for a few days and didn't fancy going into a fancy patisserie unshowered, but yours do look scrumy, as do the pancakes!! I really need to make pancakes more than just on pancake day!

  4. The maccarrons look great! I must try and attempt those. I made pancakes last weekend, I hadn't in awhile, we usually love maple syrup on ours with a pat of butter. Have a great week, and no worries on the flat, you'll find the perfect place ;)

  11. Awww Ayden you're so cute in that video! I love you accent, I always forget you're Scottish. I love to hear other creatives talking about their job when they're as passionate about it as you are!

As for those macaroons, they may not look like the ones you get in Pauls, but that doesn't really put me off, they stiill look pretty scrummy to me ;) Practice makes perfect anyway lovely. You're going to be the best host at dinner parties!!

Enjoy the wedding lovely, looking forward to hearing all about it!

  12. The pancakes looks fantastic and the macaroons still look tasty! I hope you didn't tell people they looked like cowpats before they ate them, that might put people off a little! :P
I love your new hair, it's getting really long!
As for flat hunting, don't be put off by people not turning up and other rubbish, it happenes occasionally. Once while I was waiting outside to be shown round a place the agent rang me to tell me it's been taken and to go away :/ But then I found a perfect place! It's really fun looking at lots of different places, just enjoy it and don't worry, you will find your perfect place! :)

  13. We're about to start looking for a new place to rent. I'm moving to Northern ireland in june, so we will rent for about 6 months and then try and buy a house. It still scares me how grown up and serious that is/sounds and I don't want to really think about it. :P You look lovely on the video, your accent is amazing, I love scottish acents almost as much as I love Northern irish (my fiance is irish, go firgure:P) And now I want to try and make macaroons too! :)

  19. The pancakes look fit! I've been meaning to try some American style pancakes, so much more tasty than crepes. Oh and with flat hunting, yeah it's always that stressful. We've had so many letting agents just not turn up, which is so disheartening. Good luck though, hope you find somewhere perfect! xx

  20. I tell you what, even though those macaroooooooons didn't turn out the way you wanted, they look delish!! Like whoopie pie thingys. Yummer.

  21. Can't believe you were brave enough to try and bake Macarons! They were in the final test for last year's Australian Masterchef!!
    Well done!

Don't worry about finding a flat. I've been turfed out a place and had to find a new one within one week. Not fun, but it's do-able. Remeber to ask to see the last quarter's electricity and gas bills - so you know how much to expect to pay. Check what sort of heating there is - and that it works! Check there are sufficient plug holes in each of the rooms and don't be afraid to ask whay the last tenant moved out.

Can't wait to see your wedding outfit!

  22. Those pancakes look so yummy - I'd completely forgotten about pancake day - I can't wait now!
I always watch Lorraine Pascale, and she really does make everything look so easy lol! I really want to try making the tiramisu cakes she made in the same episode.
I don't think you seem shy in that video at all - you come off very well, like you really know what you're talking about etc :) I think it's great that you've managed to go pretty much straight from uni to working in a job you love; like you said in the video, a lot of people can't say that they fully enjoy their jobs so well done to you! x

  23. Glad you sorted out the wedding present!

  24. I really must try out pancakes, these look so good. And I am sure you will find somewhere lovely to live (and maybe with that dream wardrobe too?)xx

  25. I thought you said they looked awful? Perfect circles they may not be, but I[d so eat those Macarons for you, and the pankcakes!I can't believe I lived in France for 5 months and never bought a Macaron though- they seem to be having an uprising here but they were considered a bit of an old lady thing in Toulouse.

Enjoy the wedding, nice to see something happy going on and much lukc for the flat hunting.

  26. Your pancakes looks so tasty! They'd be so good hot with honey and ice cream :)
I think there's a ton of flats in the Anniesland area to let, I see the signs on my walks to the shop. I could be wrong though, I don't pay close attention!

  27. I love your attempt at making macaroons! I've actually never tasted one but I just made a quick google search to see what they're made of and they just sound so mouth watering! I hope I can find some around my area OR even better, give my own attempt to make some :D (which can go alright, or horrible, horribly wrong haha)

Love your new hair and your video! You look so professional!

  32. you so do not look peely wally, you look fresh! I don't know exactly where you live now, but have you looked in dennistoun? I used to live in a wee one bedroom on cumbernauld road and it was dirt cheap, and really handy for town, I dono if it's too far out for you though? Good luck, house hunting is stressful! xx

  33. Ayden, I love you! Your interview is amazing, you speak so confidently and eloquently about your work. Your passion shines through! Lovely.

House/flat hunting - I won't lie, it's stressful. We were all set to move into a place before Christmas that fell through the WEEK before our move date, and we've missed out on three other properties since then. BUT! We're moving into our new place next week and all is going smoothly. You need thick skin and an obsession with Rightmove to survive! Don't worry about the landlord not showing up - that happens a lot, as well as appointments being cancelled, places looking completely different to the photos and lots of people fighting for the same place. Just keep at it, stay positive and you'll find something that's perfect for you.
