Shine a light

The weekend came and went in what felt like a whirlwind for me. I finished work at 3pm on saturday and accompanied my lovely friend Erin over to Irezumi tattoo studio in Glasgow for her 3 hour sitting. She's a brave girl! Turns out her tattoo artist was Stephen Kelly - the very man that did my swallows two years ago at a completely different studio :) So now I know where he is working I am going to keep him in mind for the new year as some new ink may be on the horizon.

Erin will need to go come back for another sitting to finish it all off, I cant believe though I forgot to take a picture before we left the studio on sat! Was looking amazing so far - beautiful butterflies in colour from her foot going up her leg. In the next sitting she is getting some background put in and the butterlies continuing onto the next foot. Do you have any ink? And did you go yourself to get it? Erin had originally planned on going herself, but I'm glad I was there to chat away and distract her! Cause even though she didnt flinch, theres no denying it hurts a tad.

Working later hours and always JUST missing my train home means the occasional dabbling in the above - to keep me warm while I wait on the next train. Fruits of the forest cupcake and Toffee Nut Latte ♥ M&S also do some amazing snacks that are only available at christmas time. Their lunch range for Shelter, with limited edition sandwiches and desserts, is so yummy. I'm a total sucker for stinky crisps, and wish the Shelter Gammon and Chutney crisps were an all year round flavour. Plus, its for a very good cause. Can't imagine not having a roof over my head... especially not in winter.

On saturday night we settled down for the X Factor and Sweeney Todd afterwards. Was a bit gruesome but by golly I love that film. Mr Depp has a lovely singing voice ;) I fell asleep, curled up on the couch with Millie and the above was david trying to snap me on my SLR quickly. He does know how to use my camera but I don't think it was on auto for him this time :p Hence me looking like something out of a drunken haze!

And I'm sure you've seen enough of this to last you a life time... but this was our sunday.

We had planned to go shopping for our very first christmas tree and some decorations, and perhaps get our monthly food shop a few days early. But the (pretty much horizontal) snow blizzard during the night left no cars able to get in and out of our street. My dad said at this point the main roads werent much better. So we settled for a new groceries from the co-op down the road, and some snowman building instead! I did more watching than building mind you... cause I cant find my mittens and there was only so much socks over hands I could take. Our poor snowman was kicked down a few hours later, we should have done him in the back garden rather than out the front. Maybe it was his demonic apple eyes that drove them to it? We were both pretty tired out after playing in the snow and I went for another nap before the Xfactor on sunday night. Weekend naps... I can see a pattern emerging here!

The snow is still pretty heavy out our way, I managed to get the train ok to work today but davids car was snowed in, so the lucky boy had a wee day off. Wish I had brought my snowboard over from my mums house, I didnt think I'd be using it any time soon so when we moved into the flat I didnt bring it with me. There are so many hills around our area that I could take it for a ride on - so as you can imagine I am not HUGELY regretting that decision! :( Maybe I can persuade my mum to drive and meet me halfway with it once the roads clear a bit more - in hope that we get another snow spell over the christmas holidays. How has the snow effected your area recently? Are there ANY parts of the country that don't have any yet? My family in norway have to deal with this weather all year round... and yet year after year in britain we come to an absolute standstill. When will we ever learn!? :)

the best thing since sliced bread

After a few days on twitter now I think its pretty safe to say it is not quite the best thing since sliced bread... but it is definately fun! Great being able to banter with all you girls more easily, so a huge thank you for the warm welcome. I have been so focused on work this week, and been busy blabbing away on twitter and posting pictures, I feel like for the first time in ages I don't have anything that interesting to blog about :( na'a mean? I'm planning on making another youtube video soon - so please hit me up with any ideas on what you'd like to see. I know themed posts have never been my strong point, and I don't know if that will change any time soon, so for now here is a little round up of what has been making me smile the past couple of weeks, via my trusty camera phone.

(click for a bigger image)

1. This one was a few months ago actually, but its the Got To Dance dome getting built outside my work. I observed on my lunch break in AWE.
2. A single high heel on a fence in town, that person must of had a good one the night before...
3. (Almost) naked mannequins in a wedding shop window! Shirts, shoes and socks is a good look ;)
4. A teeny snippet of the show I get to watch twice a day. But my general knowledge is still rubbish I'll have you know.
5. Feeling semi organised with my little standby kit. Contains one of EVERYTHING crafty related you can imagine. Well, almost.
6. Flicking through the filmbang directory and finding a picture of myself on one of the pages, whaaaat?!
7. Realising that the pink v water kinda tastes like every other v water but I think I like it the best.
8. My first twitpic - posing in the lift for y'all.
9. My AMAZING parcel from the gorgeous SJ. What an awesome girl, this cheered me up so much ♥
10. Proving that a simple dinner is often the BEST kind of dinner! (and sometimes your only option when you get in from work at 8pm and the boy has already eaten)
11. My hair is growing which makes me smile, but I need my fringe cut again.
12. A tiny little hat which I got free on a bottle of innocent smoothie... I have no idea what to do with it!

Something which I am obsessing over right now is Misfits on channel 4. Any of you watch it also? It's the first show since Lost which I am really into (and well, hollyoaks too...) I caught up on the first two episodes of the new series online, and last night watched it on e4+1 (saviour channel) I cant get enough of it! Nathan absolutely cracks me up!

Are you a religious watcher of any show? Love a good box set? Talking about hollyoaks - its a guilty pleasure of mine and watching omnibus on a sunday is the bees knees. Although recently all it has made me do is cry. I am a right blubber when it comes to sad episodes and sad films. I swear I'm not one of these people who cries at everything! But sometimes, it just can't be helped. Now tell me, will I need to get the tissues out tonight for this one?

I know I'm a bit late on the bandwagon - I've heard amazing things about it from you all in the past week or so and I can't wait to see it tonight with the boy :) Then I'm working tomorrow and sunday will be my first day off in 9 days, so can you guess that I'm looking forward to that muchly? I plan on sleeping, eating lots, hollyoaks omnibus (ovbz!) and going to buy our first christmas tree plus decorations for the flat :) What's your plans this weekend?

And one more thing, thank you all for being awesome. The support and kind words mean the world to me. And even when I'm not writing about anything that amazing you still take the time to show an interest by reading and commenting and that makes me smile :) Knowing that people actually read my little blog really does keep me going, even when my inspiration feels a bit blue. So, thank you ♥

get connected

As many of you know, I don't have a facebook, myspace, bebo, or anything like that. I did, a while ago. But they were more of a hassle than an enjoyment and I can honestly say getting rid of them was a huge weight off my shoulders. The best decision I'd made in a long time. I understand that internet trolls and social vampires are unavoidable (And no, I really don't want someone I went to school with or any ex friends/boyfriends knowing where I went on holiday or what I had for my dinner)

I know this makes me seem like the biggest hypocrite EVER (uh hullo, blog!) But I have quite enjoyed sharing my ramblings and life in general with the readers of The Little Blog Of Horrors. I am aware I can't control who I expose myself to. But I have had a change of heart and both myself and my boyfriend (who shares the same views as me about the whole social networking thing!) have signed up for Twitter! For me, I'm hoping it will help support my blog and get me chatting more with all you lovelies and my friends from back home who think I'm a nut job for not having facebook. And for David, it's primarily for his youtube channel. He has a few thousand subs... but were not a competitive couple at all ;)

The only reason why I'm dedicating an actual post about this is because a handful of you bloggy ladies have been on at me for a while to get twitter, so what better than my very own public service announcement to get the word oot! Haha. And while I'm at it, I thought I would give y'all a list of where else you can reach me on the world wide web: (work/professional enquiries) (for a chin wag)

So feel free to drop me an email, gander at my film/tv/theatre work, ask me a nosy question, listen to my daft scottish accent on youtube, AND teach me how to use twitter/come follow me? :)

And to round up this post, I'd be interested to hear what your views are on social networking via the internet, and how it has became such an integral part of our generation. How did everyone survive without it?

Happy Birthday Hello Kitty

(Hamleys in London, my 21st birthday cake, and a department store in Munich on our interrail travels)

Iconic Japanese designer Yuko Shimizu created the Hello Kitty phenomenon in November 1974, and on nov 1st of this year Miss Kitty celebrated her 36th birthday! As you know, I am a massive Hello Kitty fan (my 6 year old sister insists she is a bigger fan than me, but I beg to differ) and although it's a few weeks belated, I thought I'd say Happy Birthday and introduce you to a new character from Yuko, who hopes to have the same success as her kitty cousin.

Yuko has launched a new pop culture brand in the U.S. called Rebecca Bonbon, a cartoon French bulldog living in Manhattan.  The line is already a big success in Japan and is starting to break through here. A handful of celebs (including the likes of Kim Kardashian and Ashley Tisdale) have been spotted in Bonbon attire. So, let's introduce you to the little lady herself...

What do you think? Cute, huh? :) Hello Kitty has became a global super star, and the same future has been predicted for this little frenchie. She was actually created 5 years ago but has only been launched in North America and Europe this month. I know this is a bit of a random topic, but really I am a big child at heart and I look forward to buying my sis a few BonBon related pressies for christmas, cause I think she is adorable!

(My brother and sister on her 6th birthday, they're both getting so big!)

However... it's probably going to take any die hard fans out there much persuading that this new cousin on the block will be stealing Hello Kitty's thunder any time soon.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the kind words you left on my last post. I'm feeling better but still a bit frazzled with life if I'm honest. I just read Gem's latest post entitled 'is it time to shred the rule book?' and I think if you feel a bit lost at times then you should defo go and read it! (Actually, please go have a wee look at her blog anyways because she is an awesome girl) She talks about what we think is expected of us these days, and such pressures we put on ourselves to live upto these life 'expectations'. I can relate to it 110%! Hope you're all having a nice monday lovelies :)

the flood

You know it's time to get up when you've pressed snooze on your alarm for the 4th time, and the cat is sitting ontop of you pawing at your face (really, why do they do that?) and trying to lick your eyelashes. That's how this morning started out for me.

This week saw the end of my crunchy painting jeans, which I'm pretty sure can stand up on their own now from the amount of Jesmonite/Fibreglass on them (my jean knees looked like itchy little coconuts) - and the beginning of warm studio time, wearing nice clothes again and actually putting my 'face' on in the morning.

Ok so I lie, this was actually yesterday before I went out for lunch with my dad, step mum and baby bro. My fringe needs cut already, doesnt it?

I will admit, stress levels are wavering and I had to cancel my gym induction this morning because burrowing under the covers really feels like a much better idea. Normally when I have a list of things to do, I'm all up on it! But today... feels different. I'm my own worst enemy in all honesty.

I think I will listen to some take that, have weetabix and a cuppa and wallow in this state of limbo for an hour or so more before I snap out of it and decide to actually do something with this day. Maybe because I know I'm working the next 9 days straight is the reason why I want to enjoy this warm bed a little while longer.

where there once was not,

making and baking

I've been chatting to the lovely folk at CSN Stores again, and as I mentioned before their site literally has everything from teapots, to bedroom furniture, to gorgeous bakeware! Since I've just moved into my first flat with the mister, its amazing how your priorities change and you get excited over stuff you never used to blink a lash about. On the route to becoming fully domesticated, I really want to try my hand at baking. So I'm thinking of reviewing a few more homely products from their fabby site to help me (cause let's face it, I'm pretty hopeless)

However, last weekend at my mums me and David made an apple crumble (under my mums military instruction) It doesn't look the prettiest, but I promise you it was SO easy and absolutely delicious.

Want to give it a wee try yourself? The recipe is from the BBC website.

Apple crumble

Apple crumble

So I guess this is what they say it's meant to look like... but ours wasn't far off!

Here's what you'll need for the crumble:

300g/10½oz plain flour, sieved pinch of salt
175g/6oz unrefined brown sugar. (we used 100g normal brown sugar and 75g dark muscovado brown sugar to add a little bit more 'yum' to it)
200g/7oz unsalted butter, cubed at room temperature
Knob of butter for greasing

and for the filling:

450g/1lb apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1cm/½in pieces
50g/2oz unrefined brown sugar
1 tbsp plain flour
1 pinch of ground cinnamon

and here's what you need to do:
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
  2. Place the flour and sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Place the fruit in a large bowl and sprinkle over the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Stir well being careful not to break up the fruit.
  4. Butter a 24cm/9in ovenproof dish. Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.
  5. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling.
  6. Serve with thick cream or custard. Sa-weeet!

I really want to make this bad boy again, and I think if I actually want to get into baking good and proper, there are a few things which I've had my eye on from CSN which would help me muchly.

My mum had electronic scales and they were amazing, and some recipes can be quite particular so a pair of scales are a definate need. Maybe the cake stand... not so much. But having folks round to the flat for tea and cake it would be nice to present it on something pretty :) Oh, and we dont have any oven gloves. Major fail, I know. Dish towels are ok sometimes but burning your fingers isnt fun.

    Do you bake?
    Any tips/reccomendations for a beginner?
Or what I need, what I should avoid, or where I should look for good recipies?

    taggin' on a saturday

I've recieved a couple of tags and awards recently, so I'm currently blogging from my cosy bed and I thought I'd yet again give you all something very random to read. I really promise I'm working on more 'themed' blog posts... rather than the eclectic nonsense I share with you all. But don't expect anything amazing, haha ;)

The first one is from Kel at hair advice and all things nice. Thanks girl!

    Favourite Youtube Video

At the moment, it's this ♥

Post a picture of something geeky

I guess my piano lessons are kinda geeky?

Find a picture of something that makes you go awwww

I really did look like a little monkey baby.
    Find a funny tshirt

Its funny cause its TRUE! Any other Black Ops widows out there?

Post a still from your favourite film

     Please don't make me choose!

Recognise any of the above? I'm sure you do :)

A blog I have recently discovered

SO useful! Go check it out for yourself.

    Something from my wish list

My skin is totally lusting over this right now - especially the Welcome Matte Moisturiser.

The second and third tag is from Jade at Omg, its jades blog. Thank you so much :)

    1. Why did you create the blog?
Originally for uni - but then it led off into something completely different and since discovering this amazing community that exists online... it's just kinda flourished from there :)

    2. What kind of blogs do you follow?
Mostly beauty, fashion, the usual innit. But I do like more personal blogs that give you a little snippet into people and their life. Cause I'm nosy like that!

    3. Do you have a favorite make-up brand?
I am a bit of a Mac whore in denial.

    4. And a favorite clothing brand?
Right now I am in love with Reko dresses. I love a good bit of Henry Holland and Motel too - but if I was to only allowed to shop in one store I guess it would be Topshop. What a bore eh, soz!

    5. What make-up products are essential for you?
Powder, blusher and mascara. The rest are just luxuries - but those three would be my desert island must haves.

    6. What's your favorite colour?
Teal :) and any pastel versions of a colour.

    7. What's your favorite perfume?
Right now I am rocking Lola by Marc Jacobs, but my all time fave has to be Vera Wang Princess (original, glam and rock... gotta love them)

    8. What's the film you liked the most?
All the ones I mentioned up there and so many more! Right now, I can't wait for the new HP.

    9. What countries would you like to go?
I'd like to go back to America and Canada, and also see Australia and New Zealand and get my surf on. Next year, maybes :)

To accept the Versatile Blogger Award the rules are:
    1. Thank and link back to who gave you the award.
    2. Share 7 things about yourself.
    3. Pass it along to 7 blogs you've recently discovered and enjoy
    4. Leave your recipients a note, telling them about the award.

    7 things about me:

I have two little brothers and a little sister, all of which are halfs (two are my mummys, and one is my dad's)
My mum and dad still get on crazily well, it was just a shame they were pretty young when they had me so it didn't work out. But hey, dysfunctional families are certainly the norm!

I am self employed and all the formalities that go along with it still scare/confuse. But I'm hoping I'll get used to it.

I have 5 tattoos and would love to venture to London and get inked next by the awesome Valerie Vargas.

I have been going out with my boyfriend for 2 years, 2 months and 4 days (and I'm totally NOT counting!) which is my longest relationship ever. He is lovely jubbly ♥

I have regrets... but in hindsight, I don't think I would change many of the decisions I have made so far. Because they have all brought me to HERE, this moment in time. Right this very instance. And I am very much liking the place I'm in right now

Sometimes I wonder if you read my blog. Yes, you.

Now I'm going to tag a few of my other fave ladies at the moment for all three of these awards! So, if you're really bored do them all but if you want to pick and choose then thats cool :) Can't wait to see your answers! (Im nosy, remember?)

Plans this weekend lovelies? Have an awesome one whatever you're upto!

    A Tartan Tale

So on my little shopping trip on Saturday I decided to take a wander into Mac and see what the deal was with the new collection, A Tartan Tale. Being very scottish and very proud - how could I resist? This is what I ended up buying (the makeup justification excuses are wearing thin people...)

Cut a Caper Lipstick. So lovely! Really subtle and easy to wear. 'Nuff said :)

Pearlglide intense liner in 'Undercurrent'. Has to be my most favourite colour EVER. A really rich teal-esque green. Just been wearing it on my lower waterline for a little splash of colour on boring week day eyes.

A staple - Fluidline in Blacktrack. Having this new little pot made me realise how dried out and hard to use my last one was, ugh! I was determined to scrape the jar clean, but in some mad effort to get a bit of life back into it after I hadn't used it for a while, I depotted it (which was a bad idea) The new one is so silky and smooth and easy to apply with my wobbly hands.

'A Lady and Her Tricks' Buff and Line Brush Collection.

    L-R 187SE, 168SE, 252SE, 219SE and 209SE.

And translated from the Mac lady, that is basically a foundation brush, blusher brush, all over eyeshadow brush, blending brush and eyeliner brush. No idea what I'm going to use the tartan bag for, it even has a long strap! To suggest wearing out and about... hmm. Not too sure about that one. It is kinda cute though. But maybe just 'hanging randomly in my bedroom' kinda cute.

I know FOTD's should be a bit closer up, but here is what I bought in the flesh!
(excuse the awkward pose - I am aware I look like I'm doing the chicken dance. And yes, the fringe is back with a vengance!)

The foundation brush really is better than a flat foundation brush I had before - I never used to believe people when they said ohh its better than using your fingers, airbrushed finish etc etc and could never achieve it with the flat brush. But this one is SO much better and made my foundation go really far!

The blusher brush is lovely, soft enough but firm enough if that makes sense and the slightly angled shape helps to blush up those little apples very effortlessly. I was super impressed.

I've been trying to master eye makeup for quite a while now, and I can't believe this is me only finally giving in to 'proper' brushes - and actually using them for what they're meant for! So hopefully practise will make perfect.

However, after giving my makeup drawers a wee spring clean on sunday I am now left with a couple of used, but still GOOD doublers. So I was thinking of selling:

Angled Models Own brush (perfect for gel eyeliner)
Mac 252SE (good for all over eyeshadow, base colour perhaps)
Mac 209SE (also an eyeliner brush)
Oh, and also a little mini bare minerals kabuki brush which I forgot to picture - sorry!

As you can see they are used but I have cleaned them up as nice as I could :) still in perfect working order, so if you'd fancy trying out a few brushes on the cheap before you take the plunge and invest in a certain brand etc then this is your chance. I have ebay fee's to pay soon which is all I'm wanting to cover so I'm thinking £5 inc p&p for the 4, if anyones interested? If you are, first come first served so leave a comment below with your email address!

So, now let me ask you a couple of questions.

How much, if at all, do you use/rely on makeup brushes and what brand?

What do you clean them with, and how often?

Cheers me dears, hope everyone is having an alright week so far ♥
